Introduction

As from 1870 census of population is being executed in Hungary at every 10th year. By the end of the 19th as well as at the beginning of the 20th century the frequency of information obtained from the censuses was appropriate for evaluating and forecasting the changes in the social and economic transformations of the country.

1 Data on territories and individual parliamentary constituencies

Between April 1, 2005 and April 21, 2005 – with reference date of April 1, 2005 – a representative survey (microcensus) covering 2 percent of the Hungarian dwelling stock has been executed by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office. As a result of the survey a comprehensive picture on the demographic, educational, occupational characteristics and housing conditions of the population living in the different territories (regions, counties, individual parliamentary constituencies) and types of localities (the capital, towns, villages) is presented on detailed tables.

2 Characteristics of the population and the housing

The volume gives detailed data of the enumeration on the main demographic, educational and occupational charcteristics, the household- and family composition, the phisical criteria of the housing stock and the peculiarities of the inhabitants of the dwellings. The first group of tables contain also retrospective data.

3 Data on persons in employment

The publication gives detailed information about the situation in employment and its tendencies. On the basis of the criteria of employment (e.g. section of industry, major group of occupation) the tabulations present the changes in the structure of employment, the tendencies in daily commuting and the demographic, occupational situation of the people involved, as well as the circumstances of employment in the public and in the non-public sector. This letter information is presented not only with regard of the person but the family also.

4 Fertility

The data on fertility belong to the traditional publications of Hungarian censuses and microcensuses. The first chapter of tables contains (possibly long) time series of female fertility indicators cross-classified with marital status and age groups. The second part shows several dimensions of fertility in detailed cross-tabulations based on the 2005 microcensus, including some data on "male fertility", too. The final chapters present the data in geographic (regional, county, types of locality) breakdown.

5 Household types, family forms

The publication contains the main data on households and families. It presents the changes in number and in composition of these two smallest units of society generally, in retrospect for decades, while on the basis of the results of the 2005 Microcensus, informs on the main characteristics of households and families in detailed crosstabulations. The publication emphasises the differences and possible similarities in the characteristics of marriages and consensual unions, the two forms of family based on partnership, as well as the presentation of the characteristics of lone-parent families. The most important features are devided by locality. The assessment of the data is supported by a brief analysis.

6 Data of persons seeking employement and the unemployed

The publication gives detailed information on the most important data of persons seeking employment and the unemployed among them. Tabulations are divided to three main groups. Tabulations in the first group compiled with the purpose to value and to analyze temporal changes are mostly converted to the concepts and territorial administrative ranks valid in the time of the 2005 Microcensus. Retrospective data are compiled mainly from the information of the 1990 and the 2001 Census as well as the 1996 Microcensus, to present a detailed overview of the tendencies in unemployment since the change of regime.

7 Dwellings, housing conditions

The publication presents the dwellings and their occupants, as well as the housing conditions of households through detailed data from the 2005 Microcensus. The volume mostly contains information presented in a less detailed form only in previous publications of the series or not at all available before.

8 Daily travel of persons in employment and daytime pupils, students

The publication gives detailed information about the travel to work and school of persons in employment and daytime pupils, students, respectively. Tables present the length of time of daily travel and the means of travel combined with demographic and occupational criteria in case of persons in employment, and the type of school regarding pupils, students.

The publication gives detailed information about the educational attainment of the population.

10 Children in families

The publication gives detailed, national, and county information about demographic, educational and economic activity composition of the children living in family. Combined tables show the number and main features of brothers and sisters living together. The publication contains detailed data of the number of blood-related and foster children living in the same dwelling with their parent, grandparent, and some of the main characteristics of parents and grandparents. It presents the most important data in regional/territorial details. The assessment of the data is supported by a brief analysis and the definitions of the concepts used.

Situation of elderly population

The tables assembled from 2005 microcensus data represent demographic and occupational characteristics, household and family relations, as well as housing conditions of elderly population, occasionally using time series from previous census data. Besides national level presentation, most important features are divided by locality also. The assessment of the data is supported by a brief analysis and the definitions of the concepts used.
